What is Federal Lifeline?

The Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) was a federal initiative designed to help low-income households afford internet service. The program provided a discount of up to $30 per month for eligible households, and up to $75 per month for those on qualifying Tribal lands.

Additionally, it offered a one-time discount of up to $100 for purchasing a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers.

Unfortunately, due to a lack of additional funding from Congress, the ACP ended in June 2024.

The California LifeLine program is a state program separate from the Federal Lifeline program that provides discounted home phone and cell phone services to eligible households.

California LifeLine discounts help consumers lower the cost of their phone bills. Only one discount per household is allowed (except for teletypewriter users and for Deaf and Disabled Telecommunications Program participants).

Each household must choose to get the discount either on a home phone or on a cell phone, but not on both.

Since 1985, the Federal Lifeline program has provided a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings, including being able to connect to jobs, family and emergency services.
